What gave birth to the earth? what conditions of material existence gave the matter on earth rise? this is the thesis of tolle's work. if you track your material self backwards through time, what does our material realm become? i would say it becomes the very energy force (god, consciousness etc) that still drives evolution forward today. and besides, when you surrender your ego state to the simple idea that evolution, energy, god etc is a force greater than your ego state, you let go of the need for duality: ie you are right and tolle is wrong and accept the light in your heart. it makes for far happier lives. tolle is not prescribing religion. he is merely articulating that some wise individuals in history have caught the essence of this force and how it can help humans transcend their current evolutionary state of conflict which is rooted in ego. their message has then been hijacked by the institution set up to spread that message. and like chinese whispers, it has been lost in translation.
